Anthony Do (6-3) may be known as “The Antidote”, but his finish of Fritz Biagtan (4-1) to become the URCC Strawweight Champion on August 4, 2018 may have poisoned anyone else’s chance of becoming NorCal MMA’s 2018 Submission of the Year.
For nearly all of the three rounds, Do dominated on the ground. Of course, Biagtan flashed several moments of his will to win in the heart of Richmond, California’s Craneway Pailion, either reversing precarious positions while downed or placing the challenger from the Bay Area on the end of strikes; however it wouldn’t be enough to sway Do’s determination to bring URCC’s belt back to American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) Sunnyvale.
What set Do’s rear-naked choke, an otherwise common submission in MMA, apart from the many others captured in highlight reels was the means to the end. As the conclusion of the third, and final round, drew near, it appeared a late transition to the top and escape from the threat of an arm bar would leave Biagtan in a position to rain ground-and-pound. Do didn’t wait for any downpour; instead he flipped the script, sweeping Biagtan, taking his back, and sinking in the Mata Leon like something out of the Matrix.
Before URCC makes their return to Northern California in 2019, scheduled to take place inside Oakland’s Oracle Arena, for Do to defend his place at the top of the promotion’s 115-pound heap, fans can continue to champion his incredible feat on the canvas by voting it as NorCal MMA’s 2018 Submission of the Year when ballots are released.
