A couple of Northern California’s modern-day gladiators, Leslie ‘The Peacekeeper’ Smith (9-7-1) and Cynthia ‘Spicy’ Calvillo (5-0), will venture into Glasgow, Scotland for UFC Fight Night 113 in an attempt to plant the flag of ‘The Golden State’ in the heart of The SSE Hydro, an arena built upon ancient battlegrounds soaked in blood.
From the moment Calvillo’s walkout music cracks over the speakers, her ‘Spicy’ personality is second to none.
Calvillo entered the UFC—UFC 209—and seized control, delivering a worthwhile dose of entertainment to those who purchased the main card on pay-per-view. When Calvillo encored at UFC 210 and submitted Pearl Gonzalez, her stock in the women’s strawweight soared.
Scheduled to meet Joanne ‘Jo Jo’ Calderwood (11-2) in the co-main event of UFC Glasgow, Calvillo must enter enemy territory to defeat the former TUF (The Ultimate Fighter) competitor in her own backyard. Flying under the Team Alpha Male flag, Calvillo has already prepped her mindset: ‘Team Alpha Male versus Everybody,’ whether or not there’s a home field advantage.
Known as ‘The Peacemaker’ and a seasoned vet in the sport, the UFC’s matchmaker, Sean Shelby, assessed Smith’s Skrap Pack spirit by asking her to open UFC Glasgow against a relative unknown, Amanda Lemos (6-0-1).
The position on the card and the warm body in front of Smith means nothing. Originally slated to meet Lina Lansburg, Smith didn’t flinch when the name on the docket changed to the Brazilian native. Derailing the hype of newcomers isn’t uncommon to Smith, as she pumped the brakes on Irene Aldana with a unanimous decision victory at UFC on FOX 22 in Sacramento, and she’s eager to pour vinegar in Lemos’ Cheerios during the UFC Fight Pass early prelims.
For fight fans operating on Pacific Standard Time, UFC Fight Night 113’s early prelims begin on UFC Fight Pass at 9:00 a.m., and the main card will be broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 at noon.
