Unpredictability, both in and out of the cage, surrounded NorCal Fight Series (NCFS) in the fifth event hosted by the all-amateur promotion—NCFS 5.
The lineup presented on the evening of March 18, 2017 read like a menu in a foreign language because many of the match-ups were much different weeks, days, even hours before NCFS 5’s opening bell rang. Only a vacant heavyweight belt hung in the balance, though each of the eighteen participants competed with hearts of champions. Each mixed martial artist marched into the center of the Metro City Soccer Complex, and—win or lose—walked away with a valuable learning experience, all while drawing Northern California’s fight fans from their folding chairs.
Main Event: Dyllan Snavely vs. Akuma Maters for the vacant NCFS Heavyweight Title
In a rematch where the stakes were more rich than bragging rights alone, Snavely and Maters nearly filled NCFS’s cage to its capacity in their second encounter. Previous to this mid-March melee of magnanimous body mass, these two ripped the fencing from its seams at Cage Combat Fighting Championships, causing a halt to the action and a decision in Snavely’s favor.
At NCFS 5, the tide swayed in Maters’ direction. Although Snavely controlled considerable time from the clock, pressing Maters against the wire walls—pausing the breath of everyone in attendance, the aggression and output from Maters captured the attention of the officials filling out the scorecards.
Three rounds and six-minutes later, the judges were a bit divided in their opinions about this rubber match; however, in the end, they bestowed NCFS’s heavyweight crown to Maters.
